Holiday home rental on Canal du Midi Facilities:

A wooden staircase leads from the entrance up to its two bedrooms. Opposite the twin bedroom is a bathroom with shower whilst the master bedroom has an en suite bathroom with bath and shower. Across the landing is a magnificent split-level open plan living area with traditional beamed ceiling and windows on three sides. The well-equipped kitchen has a fridge/freezer, dishwasher, electric oven and gas hob. French windows open onto the roof terrace with barbeque, garden furniture and views across the vineyards. There is a washing machine in a third bathroom on the ground floor. The swimming pool is shared with the friendly couple who run our boat hire business next door and look after the villa.

Our verdict:

Last visited October 2009. This holiday home is ideal if you want to find a holiday home rental on Canal du Midi with a swimming pool. The accommodation is spacious and well equipped for 4 people. Le Somail is conveniently located to explore the sites of Languedoc Roussillon and the South of France. Just sit back in the evening in the garden of this holiday villa and watch the boats float past on the Canal du Midi with a glass of wine in hand. Ah! perfect!!

We have stayed in many gites and apartments and in many ways this was one of the best. Small things made a lot of difference. One can buy lovely food from a charcuterie in France but never have an oven - so having a working oven was a great bonus and meant we could avail ourselves of culinary delights. First time ever had an iron and again a great blessing with 4 people on holiday! A dishwasher meant I was not stuck to the sink on holiday. We had a lovely large living/dining room and kitchen in which to keep cool, a balcony we could eat on with a great view and (unusually) a pool with sun and shade! 2 bathrooms between 4 (with 2 teenage boys) made for an easy life with no arguments. The owners were on hand, friendly and helpful but never intrusive. The property was in the thick of things in the hamlet but really peaceful and quiet. The hamlet of Le Somail is lovely and the delight was to discover that the local 'shop' was actually a boat. Le Somail must also have one of the best ice-cream parlours in France! Shopping in Narbonne was only 20 minutes away, supermarket nearer still. Nearest village, Cabezac, has an Ace restaurant!

There is wonderful variety of scenery sea, vineyards, wild flattish plains and dramatic hills. The Pyrenees are within striking distance. The Cathar towns and castles are really amazing.

I would have no hesitation recommending Constantia and will seriously consider going back again before too long.
