Canal du Midi
Narbonne is operated by Minervois Cruisers from their spot in the delightful hamlet of Le Somail on the banks of the Canal du Midi. This tree-lined canal that runs from Toulouse to the Mediterranean sea, is the largest UNESCO World heritage site on earth. It has come to symbolise the slow, relaxed life of the South of France. The brain-child of Paul Riquet, a tax collector from Beziers, the Canal du Midi was the most complex and greatest civil engineering undertaking since the time of the Romans. Passing under the walls of historic Carcassonne the quintessential South of France experience is to boat, walk or cycle along Riquet''s canal. Our favourite stretch of the Canal du Midi is in between Colombiers and Capestang. Here you will also find the Oppidum d''Enserune. This pre-Roman settlement is perched on a ridge above the vineyards of Beziers. Look down and see the Basin de Montady, with its fields shaped like a wagon wheel.
Le Somail lies at the heart of the Minervois wine region, close to the fascinating cities of Carcassonne, Narbonne and Beziers - all of which can be visited by canal. Le Somail is on the Grand Bief, offering 54 kilometres of lock-free cruising through delightful countryside and vineyards of the Canal du Midi Region.

If you are looking for a Canal du Midi cruise boat in the South of France for a peaceful and relaxing holiday with your family or with friends, then this canal boat rental is ideal. Well fitted out, this first class boat hire accommodation will have you unwinding within hours. Cruising along the Canal du Midi is the perfect way to see the South of France.
Suggested Route in Narbonne
1 Week - Beziers (Fonserannes) and Narbonne (108 Kms and 20 Locks)
Day 1 Stay at Le Somail overnight or travel as far as Argeliers (6 kms) where there is a restaurant and a small shop.
Day 2 Head for Capestang (17 kms from Argeliers along theCanal du Midi). It is a small attractive town with a good range of facilities, including a Market on Sunday and Wednesday mornings in the square. There are also bars and restaurants clustered round the square and the church is well worth a visit. There is a supermarket (Intermarche) on the outskirts of town - but it is a good walk. You can either stop here the night or continue along the Canal duMidi through the Malpas Tunnel to Colombiers (a further 11 kms from Capestang). At Colombiers there is a modern Port area with a range of shops, restaurants and an ATM machine.
Day 3 From Capestang or Colombiers, head along the Canal du Midi to Beziers (7 kms from Colombiers), and moor at the top of Fonserannes Staircase Locks - they are spectacular. Have a good look round and watch boats negotiating the locks. Afterwards, either visit Beziers or head back towards Colombiers for the night.
Day 4 From Colombiers head past Capestang and Argeliers and turn of the Canal du Midi onto the Canal de Jonction towards Salleles d'Aude (34 kms and 5 locks). Salleles d'Aude offers a range of shops and bars/restaurants.
Day 5 From Salleles d'Aude continue down the Canal de Jonction before entering the River Aude for a short time then heading onto the Canal de la Robine towards Narbonne (12 kms and 5 locks) into the port area. Spend the rest of the day exploring this old Roman city.
Day 6 Thursdays only. Start the day by visiting the fabulous Market in Narbonne - held on both banks of the canal. There is also a wonderful indoor market with cafe bars and a lively atmosphere. Then explore the enormous Cathedral of Narbonne.
Day 7 From Narbonne, return to Le Somail along the Canal du Robine and the Canal du Midi
